The Art of Travel Entertainment (Hotel Edition)

By Kristin Glaeser-Cavazos · September 6, 2026

Here’s my two cents: sharing a single hotel room with kids is a sport for which there was no training nor handbook.

If you ever hope to get dressed, unpack without a toddler raiding the minibar or climbing into the shower with it on (of course, I am MAKING UP THESE scenarios these have NEVER HAPPENED TO US), or enjoy five sweet minutes of peaceful wind-down time, you need a survival strategy.

Our survival strategy involves low-mess, screen-free activities that we have on standby.

So, what is currently in our hotel toolkit?

Travel Toy 1: Mideer 6 in 1 Board Game Book

If your family also loves games and board games like we do, this is our go-to for board games while traveling. It packs a serious punch of entertainment without eating up your precious luggage allowance. It is a little on the heavy side, which is why it’s better for hotels than on-the-go restaurants.

Travel Toy 2: Stickicubes

If your kids are visual, hands-on builders, trying to bring standard blocks on a trip is a recipe for losing half of them under the wardrobe. These are the perfect high-engagement alternative.

Travel Toy 3: Petit Collage 2-Sided Pouch Puzzle

Puzzles are fantastic for focused, quiet time, but cardboard boxes get crushed, and standard puzzles can feel like a one-and-done activity. This one solves both of those problems in style.

Travel Toy 4: Melissa & Doug Play to Go Food Cups

Pretend play is a toddler lifesaver, but bringing a whole play kitchen on vacation is obviously out of the question. These play cups pack all the fun of pretend snacks with absolutely none of the real-life crumbs.

Travel Toy 5: Creativity for Kids Sensory Minis Cloud Clay Sensory Toy for Toddlers

If you need a tactile, soothing activity to keep little hands happily engaged without making a mess, this mini sensory kit is a wonderful option. It offers a calm, hands-on experience ideal for downtime during travel.

To close us out…

For a solid hotel stay, you don’t need to pack the entire playroom—just a few smart, multi-functional, and compact toys that make a small hotel room feel like a cozy adventure.

Pop a few of these in your suitcase. Who knows? Your kids may actually sleep past 6:00 AM.

I’m kidding, of course they won’t. 😉
