Real talk: I REALLY struggle sometimes when eating out with our kids.
You just want to enjoy your meal and maybe a glass of wine in peace (also if you haven’t read the post where I dumped wine on myself not once, but twice in the same meal, go do yourself a favor and give it a read), but the ticking clock of toddler (or older child) boredom is always lurking in the background.
So, what lives in our dining-out toolkit?
We do try our best to keep restaurant meals analog, and only use toys/games. It lets us pretend we’re a wholesome, conversational family for forty-five minutes.
Travel Toy 1: Reusable Sticker Books
Yes, these are making a repeat appearance because they are just that good. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. These are a staple for us whether we’re at 30,000 feet or sitting at a corner booth.
- Fun Factor: Keeps kids engaged in visual storytelling and creative scene building right on the table (or window, if you’re lucky enough to get a booth).
- Why We Love It: Completely mess-free, peel off endlessly, and won’t leave a single sticky smudge on the restaurant’s polished wood.
Travel Toy 2: Petit Collage Shine Bright Magnet Set
This one is a permanent resident of my purse. Seriously, it lives in there, and I do not take it out unless we are actively sitting at a restaurant table. It’s my “doctor appointment, surprise restaurant, waiting in carpool too long” toy that just stays in my purse year-round.

A reusable fabric coloring placemat is the upgrade you didn’t know you needed. ESPECIALLY if you have an artistic/creative kiddo like ours who loves to color constantly.

- Why We Love It: They roll up tiny, use washable markers, and let your kid consistently work on the same piece of “artwork” for a long time. When you’re done and ready to use it again, you wash the placemat, and the COLOR GOES AWAY, and you have a BRAND NEW PLACEMAT. Sorry for all caps, I just seriously think they’re so cool.
Travel Toy 4: Lego Recreate Sets
If your kids are Lego-obsessed, trying to bring a giant bin of blocks to a restaurant is a recipe for disaster. Instead, we bring a small, curated “Recreate” set with a few challenge cards, and it actually makes it a bit more interactive for kid + parent to work together.
- Fun Factor: Promotes problem-solving and spatial reasoning as kids try to rebuild the designs shown on the Recreate cards.
- Why We Love It: It keeps their hands and brains fully occupied, and the limited piece count means cleanup is a breeze before the food arrives. BONUS: We gave these as a party favor for our youngest’s birthday this year- they were a hit.
Travel Toy 5: Travel Card Games
When the food is taking forever and everyone is starting to get hangry, a quick card game is the ultimate distraction. We love Clue (Squishmallows) and Monopoly Go (KPop Demon Hunters) options, and get them in kid-friendly designs.
- Fun Factor: Fast-paced, beautifully illustrated games that are easy for little ones to learn but actually fun for adults to play too.
- Why We Love It: They come in sturdy, compact boxes that slide easily into a backpack or jacket pocket, making them perfect for bridging the gap between ordering and eating.

Ultimately, restaurant dining with kids is all about strategic distraction. You don’t need to pack the entire playroom—just a few high-quality, highly engaging toys that make the table feel like an interactive playground rather than a waiting room.
